Uten Sukker is an informational and educational database aimed at dissecting what we’re actually eating, with a particular focus on sugar. The organization runs the website utensukker.org where they cover research on sugar and our eating habits.
“There is a large part of the Nordic population that is trending toward more health conscious eating. In the journey of becoming healthier, information is key. The function of Uten Sukker in this process is to inform the consumer of what’s on his plate each day and help him to make healthier choices, if that’s what he wants”, explains Loredana M. Munteanu.
The team behind the Uten Sukker is composed of three people; Benedicte Wilson, Erika Palmer, and Loredana M. Munteanu. Benedicte leads Uten Sukker’s strategy, Erika creates processes and technology to support its growth and Loredana is responsible for the organization´s global vision and strategic direction. The organization also collaborates with other professionals as Synne Victoria Guldahl, also known as The Sugar-Free Baker.
“I founded Uten Sukker with the aim of responding to the simple question ‘What are we really eating?’ Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been fascinated by health, nutrition, and sports. I understood, thanks to my mother, that the old saying, we are what we eat, is true. She has struggled with food intolerance and allergies for many years and I grew up seeing the shocking side effect of sugar. Despite this strong influence, my background has nothing to do with nutrition. I have a degree in journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain and I have studied System Dynamics at the University of Bergen in Norway and in the MIT in Boston,USA.”
Uten Sukker has a focus on the Nordic region in first hand, as the Nordic countries are among the biggest consumers of sugar in the world.
“The Nordic diet is based on high intakes of fish such as herring, mackerel, salmon and trout, which is rich in protein, omega-3s and antioxidants. However, data from market research firm Euromonitor suggest that the average Norwegian person also consumes 83.1g of sugar per day. This means that Norway has the 13th higher position on the planet, which is quite alarming.”
On the website, Uten Sukker publishes regular posts commenting on and investigating topics like sugar addiction,
corporate funding of ‘independent’ associations for sugar research, the effect of sugar on health and information about different types of sugar, between many other topics.
The organization also runs a popular Instagram account where followers can get a clearer view of the amount of sugar they really consume. Popular foods and sweets are photographed next to the amount of sugar cubes they contain.
“Sugar is very sneaky and the most of the people are eating sugar without even knowing about it. Of course, everyone knows that cake, doughnuts, and candy bars contain sugar. But, how many people do actually know how much sugar is in their favorite yoghurt, sauce or even sausage? The sugar cubes are the perfect way to translate unfamiliar names like maltose, molasses, maltodextrin, cane juice or corn syrup into something that everyone recognizes.”
“On the other hand, we know that it is a very simplistic way to categorize sugars. We are aware that lactose and natural fructose have a different chemical composition than sucrose (table sugar). However, we show processed products that contain a mixture of sugars that can affect negatively our health. No one should worry about the sugar
contained in a banana.”
The team behind Uten Sukker aims to continue to grow the site in order to raise awareness about sugar for the public.
“Our main objective is to reach as many persons as possible. We are preparing a ’30-day sugar-free challenge’ to help and support people to take the first step towards a healthier lifestyle. Therefore, I could say that our ultimate goal is to help people to make a positive change in their lives.”
